Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about MinimalistNotes. Can't find what you're looking for? The answer is probably here.

Does MinimalistNotes work offline?

Yes, MinimalistNotes works completely offline. The app uses your browser itself for storage, meaning your notes are saved locally on your device. Once the app is loaded in your browser, you can write, edit, and read notes without any internet connection. This works on planes, subways, and anywhere without network access.

Do I need to create an account?

No, MinimalistNotes does not require any account creation. You can start writing immediately without providing an email, password, or any personal information. Your notes are stored locally in your browser, not on our servers, so there's no need for user accounts.

Where are my notes stored?

Your notes are stored in your browser itself. Notes never leave your device unless you explicitly share them using the share feature. We do not have access to your notes, and we do not store any note content on our servers (except temporarily for shared notes).

Is MinimalistNotes free?

Yes, MinimalistNotes is completely free with no hidden costs, premium tiers, or subscription fees. All features including voice dictation, text-to-speech, export options, and sharing are available at no cost. The app is funded as a passion project and will remain free.

How does voice dictation work?

MinimalistNotes uses your browser's built-in Web Speech API for voice dictation. Click the microphone button in the editor toolbar to start dictating. Your speech is converted to text in real-time directly in your browser. The feature works in Chrome, Edge, and Safari on supported devices. No external apps or services are required.

What text-to-speech options are available?

MinimalistNotes uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech - no external APIs or accounts needed. You can adjust playback speed and choose from available voices. Coming soon: optional support for higher quality voices via your own ElevenLabs or OpenAI API key (BYOK).

How do shared notes work?

When you share a note, a temporary copy is uploaded to our servers and a unique link is generated. Shared links automatically expire after 30 days and the content is deleted from our servers. Recipients can view the note in read-only mode without creating an account. You can share the link via email, social media, or messaging apps.

What does token counting do?

Token counting shows how many tokens your text contains, which is useful for anyone working with large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or Claude. Tokens are the units these AI models use to process text. Knowing your token count helps you stay within context limits when crafting prompts or preparing content for AI tools.

Can I export my notes?

Yes, you can export any note in three formats: Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt), or PDF. Click the share button on any note and choose your preferred export format. The exported file downloads directly to your device with your note's content preserved.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

If you clear your browser data (cookies, cache, site data), your notes stored in your browser itself will be deleted. This is because notes are stored locally in your browser. To preserve important notes, export them before clearing browser data. We recommend periodically exporting notes you want to keep long-term.

Does MinimalistNotes sync across devices?

No, MinimalistNotes does not sync across devices because notes are stored locally in each browser. This is a deliberate privacy feature - your notes never touch our servers. If you need notes on multiple devices, you can export from one device and import on another, or use the share feature to access notes temporarily from any device.

Is MinimalistNotes a Progressive Web App (PWA)?

MinimalistNotes is designed to work like a PWA with offline support. On supported browsers, you can install it to your home screen for a native app-like experience. The app caches necessary files for offline use and works without internet once loaded.

What browsers are supported?

MinimalistNotes works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Voice dictation requires browser support for the Web Speech API, which is available in Chrome, Edge, and Safari. For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Edge.

How is my privacy protected?

Privacy is protected through local-only storage: notes exist only in your browser itself and never touch our servers unless you share them. We don't require accounts, so we collect no personal information. We use privacy-focused analytics that don't track individual users. Shared notes are automatically deleted after 30 days.
